Level II – Mar. 16 – Sandan Nagashi

In this lesson we will study three betsuden (special teachings or variation) of shoka known as Jodan, Chudan and Gedan Nagashi (Sandan Nagashi) as well as refine our skills in creating a nejime (the flowers of the tai area in a nishuike shoka).

AM lesson you will create any one of the three levels of a Sandan Nagashi and in the PM you will create any one of the other two styles with different materials. All arrangements will be Nishuike so we can also focus on the neijime of a nishuike shoka.

Examples of these three types of Shokas are depicted below. These three arrangements were created by Stephanie English.

Please bring:

  • Type A or D container with an opening large enough for a 3″ diameter kenzan or larger. Kenzan with an ashi (stem) is preferred.  Please no bronzes this time. A Shin or Gyo style vase will be best. See Invitation to Ikenobo Shoka Shofutai I for page 4 for details.
  • We are creating two designs. Consider bringing two different containers or at least a 2nd kenzan for your 2nd design.
  • Pebbles to raise your kenzan to within 1/2 inch of the top edge of your container. Pebbles must be no larger than your little finger nail.
  • Line material and all flowers will be provided for this lesson.
  • Check the Resources page of this website for a list of what to bring to class
  • All floral material will be provided.
  • Your lunch or a snack.

Please read:

  • By now you should know the three basic yakueda in a shoka, their placement (sashiguchi) in the kenzan, their proportions and the difference between a hongatte an gyakugatte arrangement. Not sure?  Read Invitation to Ikenobo Shoka Shofutai I book and review the glossary that is on this website on the Resources & Links  page.
