April 21, 2027 – Shoka & Rikka Shimputai

We will make two shimputai designs – one Shoka Shimputai and a completely different one as a Rikka Shimputai! Why two different? Because the pattern and the rules for each are very different!

Please bring:

  • All materials for a Shoka Shimputai! Materials for Rikka Shimputai will be provided with the exception of some line materials that will be assigned. See details below.
  • Any two different containers – Type A, C, D, G or G container with opening large enough for a 2-3″ diameter kenzan. Tatehana vases can be used for a Shoka Shimputai, but not for a Rikka Shimputai.! A more modern container is preferred for any Shimputai designs and you may bring a free style container if there is enough time for a bonus arrangement with left over materials.
  • Pebbles to raise your kenzan to within 1/2 inch of the top edge of your container. Pebbles must be no larger than your little finger nail.
  • Wire, tape, wire cutters, pliers, pinchers etc. are required equipment for this class.   Wire and tape will not be available for sale at this lesson unless you have made prior arrangements with Sensei Stephanie

  • Most floral material will be provided, but you should bring some of the following: foxtail fern, cattail leaves, sea grape, lily grass, nicely dead or dying or withered grasses and palm leaves other greens of your choosing as well as small flowers. Other materials may be assigned!
  • Check the Resources page of this website for a list of what to bring to class
  • Read previous class notes on Shoka & Rikka Shimputai
  • Your lunch or a snack.

We arrive at 9:15 AM, set up for class and make any necessary ginza purchases. The lesson begins at 9: 30 AM and you are generally on your way home by about 3PM. Bring a lunch or snack to enjoy.

There will be a definitive break between the arrangements at about noon to allow everyone the opportunity to watch the critiques of all the arrangements and the chance to have a lunch break.

Please do not take your arrangement apart until all arrangements have been critiqued. If you need to leave before all arrangements have been critiqued, you will not get credit for the lesson. Plan your time accordingly.
